Common Orthodontic Issues & What to Do
Loose Bracket or Band
Use orthodontic wax to cover the area. You can also use a clean nail clipper to trim excess wire if safe to do so.
If discomfort persists more than 1–2 days or causes a sore.
Poking Wire or Irritating Bracket
If it's still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with wax. If it fully detaches, keep it safe and bring it with you.
Call to schedule a repair.
Lost or Broken Retainer
Do not try to wear a cracked retainer. If you’ve lost it, keep your teeth as clean as possible and contact us.
Promptly, to avoid unwanted tooth movement.
Mouth Sores or Ulcers
Rinse with warm salt water and use wax to protect irritated areas. Topical gels (like Orabase or Orajel) may help.
If the sore is large, persistent, or bleeding.
Injury or Trauma
If you’ve suffered a hit to the mouth or jaw, check for loose teeth or bleeding. Apply cold compresses for swelling.
Immediately — or go to urgent care if injury is severe.
